LOWENSTEIN
Barbara
Lowenstein started her publishing career at the Sterling Lord Agency as an assistant to the dramatic agent. She then moved on to Lancer Books, one of the last independent paperback houses, where she created the first line of trade paperbacks in the industry. There, she published self-help, psychology, how-to, crafts and cooking titles. In 1976, after a brief stint as Director of Subsidiary Rights for Walker Books, she started Lowenstein Associates, which allowed her to combine her editorial skills with her gift for selling.
Over the years, Barbara has developed a reputation for representing bestselling medical books and has represented the Academy of Pediatrics, the American Cancer Society and Columbia University School of Public Health, among others. She represents many health experts and psychologists, including Barbara Keesling, Ph.D, renowned sexologist and author of MEN IN BED; Cordelia Fine, author of A MIND OF ITS OWN: How the Brain Distorts and Deceives; Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, Ph.D and Roberta Golinkoff, Ph.D, authors of EINSTEIN NEVER USED FLASHCARDS; nutritionist Rovenia Brock, Ph.D, author of DR. Barbara is known throughout the industry as an intrepid world traveler. Her far-flung journeys to such remote spots as Papua, New Guinea, Tajikistan and Iran allow her to combine her love of adventure with social and human interaction. She has traveled to over 15 African countries and is on the Advisory Board of Village Health Works in Burundi, Africa.
She’s currently looking for writers who have a platform and are leading experts in their field, including business, women’s issues, psychology, health, science and social issues, and is particularly interested in strong new voices in fiction and narrative nonfiction.
